Messy and Dressuppy

I'm feeling a little tired and frustrated today. Yesterday Eva woke up with the sniffles. In light of the current health climate around here, her school has asked us not to send children with signs of illness. So she has been home even though she's really not feeling that bad. Also, our helper Claudia got a full time job, which is great for her. She offered to come help me on her lunch break (2 hours long) this week and on her day off going forward. I gratefully accepted. But she didn't show up yesterday or today! I haven't been able to keep up with the dishes, let alone the rest of the house. Our two munchkins seem to have taken everything we own out of its place and left it elsewhere. It's impressive. So, our house is a disaster and my trip-preparation plans are not moving ahead as smoothly as I'd hoped. AND, of course I'm so frustrated with Claudia's no shows not only because of the state of the house, but because a decision to say adios to her would mean coming home from vacation to a dirty messy house. Even if Andrew and I managed to get all the housecleaning done, the amount of dust that would build up...! And my poor ficus tree, which I've somehow managed to keep alive for 6 months! I can't hire someone new a few days before leaving on vacation! So I'm kind of stuck relying on her despite her unreliability. Augh.

In more fun news, yesterday the kids and I got haircuts. They were amazing at the salon. Eva did awesome covering her mouth for every cough and sneeze. While I was getting my cut, they installed themselves at a station and so quietly played and coloured. I have mixed feelings about my hair. I really like it on the one hand. But on the other hand I told him I was growing it and he cut quite a bit off. I have been trying to grow my hair out forever! Eva got the full salon treatment, including wash, dry and straightening. She looked so cute. She wouldn't let me take her photo though. Micah was great as usual getting his hair cut and proudly posed for a shot.

Micah wore that bandaid for two days. He originally insisted he had a boo-boo on his hand, then later installed it on his face. He wore his long sleeved Superman pjs for most of the day yesterday which was cute but I don't know how he stood the heat. Right now he's wearing a pair of Eva's green fuzzy socks. That guy is a little character.

Georgina, Blacktop and the Smell of Poop

Some exciting stuff happening around here this week!

I finally finished the latest and most intensive crochet project. Her name is Georgina. Overall, I am pleased. Though I think I used the right wool and the hook was even a little smaller than called for, her body seems so much looser than the pattern photo! Which is surprising because historical attempts at crochet and knit showed me to work more on the tight side of the gauge spectrum. But I think she still looks pretty good. Eva loves her. I was planning to give her away but it doesn't look like I'll be able to wrestle her from Eva's grip. It was hard enough to get a photo. I am not inclined to make another giraffe anytime soon partly because this one took me so long! The other reason is because I was embarrassed carrying her around when she was just a head and body. Looked more like man parts than giraffe parts, if you know what I mean.

Now I'm making a bunny. It seems to be a faster project, and so cute. I also have a lion project waiting in the wings.

The streets in our neighborhood are being blacktopped. Time to break out the roller blades! Ha ha. It looks and feels marvelous out there. Our shoes are a mess from crossing the street while they were working, but otherwise I am so happy!

It took us a few days, but we finally realized that the water on our driveway + poop smell = raw sewage leakage issue. I put out the word to my Circle of Friends buddies and came away with a reference to a wonderful handyman! He was really terrific. He identified that the source of the problem was serious cloggage. Our water supply has quite a bit of sand and whatnot in it, and when that combines with grease and even soap and detergent, it makes a big wad that plugs things up. We were lucky that the drain thingie on the driveway wasn't sealed up so tight it couldn't let the sewage out, actually, because otherwise it would have been coming up our toilets and sinks.

While he was at it, he noticed that we had a leak where the water comes in from the street, and even reported it to the water company on our behalf!! I was so pleased with his work and would have been happy to pay him whatever he asked.

Bursting with Pride

We had year-end parent teacher conferences today and I almost wept. I knew that it was going pretty well but their report indicated far more progress than I had expected!!

Eva has opened up beautifully at school. She is relaxed, interested, curious, and much more assertive. She has become much more patient. She understands a lot of Spanish, and asks someone if she isn't sure. She interacts with her classmates in a combination of English and Spanish. She accepts invitations to work and play together (though she hasn't quite made it to the point where she does the inviting). A really big milestone happened last week. The children take turns bringing snack for the whole class about once a month. The child who has brought the snack is in charge of leading the prayer. Up until now she has declined when it is her turn. Last week, she insisted, and did beautifully. They said the look on her face afterward was almost one of shock and disbelief that she had overcome her trepidation and really done it! Yay Eva!!

They told us she is very intelligent. She concentrates very well and her work is neat and detailed. They were particularly impressed by her drawing of the road to Mazatlan. She has an excellent memory. She is very observant as well, and often already has a good idea of how to use materials she hasn't worked with before, because she has observed other children using them. She is moving along well in math- adding, subtracting and dividing. She is keen to work on writing.

She is struggling a little with differentiating the phonics sounds of English vs Spanish letters. Not surprising.

I asked them for suggestions about how to manage a situation like the one that happened at the Day of the Child event. Eva refused to participate in any of the activities. They suggested respecting her desire to not participate, but not letting that stop us from participating and enjoying. In other words, give her the time and space to find her comfort zone, but don't give her the power to control our activities. I thought that was good advice.

Have I mentioned how much I love this school??? Her teachers obviously care about her. They care about her emotional health and development just as much as her academic development. They respect her individuality, enjoy her, and celebrate her successes. They support her in her struggles. They set boundaries. They challenge her. They provide a safe environment where she can find her own way and achieve at her own pace. They build relationships with the whole family and see themselves as partners with us. They are kind and gentle and loving. These observations are not limited to Eva's teachers. Every member of staff and administration has exhibited these qualities. I think we've stumbled upon a very special place and I am so grateful and blessed.

Micah stayed home with Bertha while we went to the school. He was very excited when she got here, but got very sad and spent a large portion of the time we were gone crying and then watching for me out the front window. Finally, he consented to have some cantaloupe and then asked to watch tv. I guess having a babysitter is more fun when your big sister is there too.

Weekend Activities

Two very contrasting days for me this weekend. Saturday was WAY too busy for my liking. All good stuff, but too busy. I used to have busy days like that all the time but now I will do whatever I can to avoid it going forward. I like my nice slow pace of life, thank you.

Saturday morning it was Andrew's turn to sleep in so I got up with Micah at 5:30. Got most of the dishes done which felt good. Headed to yoga at 9:00. I just didn't have enough sleep in me so I was useless. Right after yoga I hurried straight to my La Leche League meeting. Fourth in the series of four!! I enjoy going but it's nice to not "have" to go now that my course requirement is completed.

Got home, ate, packed us up and headed out to a birthday party. Swimming, pizza, nice people... Lots of fun. We noticed that the kids have finally reached that age where parties aren't so exhausting because they can fend for themselves a lot more. We actually fit in quite a bit of adult conversation!

Watched and enjoyed Valkyrie and fell into bed exhausted.

Today felt like Mother's Day all over again! I slept until 10am, completely undisturbed, and woke to a clean kitchen and empty house. After a very nice Quiet Time, I spent the afternoon cooking. Figured I should take advantage of the relatively cool weather to use the oven. I was proud to make quite a good lasagna without a recipe. I have come a long way. Then I whipped up some oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies. Muy delicioso! Too delicioso. I have authorized Andrew to intervene if I try to eat any more tonight.

Now I'll watch a little tv and work on some crochet.

Tomorrow's kind of an exciting day. Andrew and I are meeting with Eva's teachers in the morning since we will be already gone when they normally have parent-teacher conferences. I look forward to hearing what they have to say. I asked Bertha to come hang out with Micah while we're doing that. Eva will spend the afternoon at school doing a special event. They're renting inflatables and some are waterslides, fun! It will be a long day for her away from me so hopefully she can enjoy the event and not get sad because she misses home.

Uterus Colouring Pages

I just gave the kids "uterus" colouring pages.

Yep. That's what I said.

I was watching a YouTube video about how the birth control pill is a potential abortifacient and Micah walked up as it was showing a diagram of the uterus. He loudly announces, "I want to colour that monster!!!" Eva immediately wanted to colour one too. Since we're almost out of ink in our stinky printer I drew one for each of them. And they are happily colouring away.

I explained to Eva what it is and a bit about how to works, but I think Micah still thinks it's a monster.

A Different Kind of Weekend

Most of our weekends are spent all together as a family. We get so little time all together during the week that we really appreciate that opportunity to be together while we're all awake. But this weekend was a little different, and it was fun to mix it up.

Andrew went to work for a few hours Saturday morning and I really wanted to go to yoga so I called Bertha to babysit. The kids were thrilled and ran around like mad people when she arrived. They spent the morning jumping on the trampoline and eating. On a whim, we asked Bertha if she wouldn't mind coming back in the evening so we could finally take some belly photos. She said yes! It was fun getting out just the two of us, and recording this special time in a special way.

Sunday morning we met Manuel and Xochi at the park. It was surprisingly and wonderfully cool and the kids played for a very long time. After lunch both kids were invited over to play at Xochi's house. It was weird dropping Micah off... he didn't even look back to say goodbye. He was so excited to be going to play with the girls and looking forward to eating muffins- the last time we were there Ana served muffins and Micah is a huge muffin fan.

Andrew and I almost didn't know what to do with ourselves. We hung around at home just soaking up the altered atmosphere for a while then we headed to the mall to do a couple of errands. We stopped a Haagan Dazs for a small cup of ice cream.... Oh my. I had the Belgian chocolate and it was incredible. I love love loved it!!! Good thing I don't have it available to me at home! Then we got trapped in the mall parking lot and arrived a little late to pick up the kids. They didn't want to leave. They'd had a marvellous time! It was fun shaking up our usual routine.
